Dear Dr. Stefanie Brueggemann,

Excuse me for writing to you in English. Feel free to respond in German, because I still speak the language quite often. My native language is Dutch. I am Counsul General for the Netherlands in Western America based in San Francisco.

In a few German newspapers I read about some remarkable outcomes of your restoration of the Regierungspalais, Badenstrasse 17 in Stralsund. An unknown underground corridor, probably used for water. Smoking pipes from Gouda, the Netherlands.

Perhaps you already guessed: Governor General Johan August von Meyerfeldt (1664-1749) is an ancestor of mine. I wrote a book about the Swedish noble family Meijerfeldt. There must be a copy in the city archive. General Meijerfeldt and his son both fought in the Southern Netherlands when they were young; that could explain their preference for smoking a Gouda pipe.

I am related to Johan August jr., who had a natural pre-marriage child at his Pomeranian estate Nehringen-Medrow in 1760. Before the Swedish family died out the natural son (again with the first names Johan August) came to Amsterdam in 1793.

I’m afraid I cannot give you any new or relevant facts for your work. In case you find anything of interest for me or have questions about the life of Johan August sr please approach me.

With kind regards,
Hugo von Meijenfeldt
