Dear Madam/Sir,

Next month my son and I will trace our ancestors in Sweden by researching archives and libraries and visiting buildings. On the afternoon of Thurday 25 August we would like to visit Stola Herrgård. Our special aim is to make photographs of the paintings of two young counts Johan August (1766-1791) and Axel Friedrich (1769-1794) von Meijerfeldt. As far as we know a painting of their grandmother Brita Barnekow (1700-1771) is also in Stola.

Is our visit on that day possible and are we allowed to make the photographs?

Best regards,
Hugo von Meijenfeldt

Dear Jörgen Lindquist,

Thank you very much for your quick answer.

The front and back photo of the painting of Brita Barnekow was a nice surprise. I have a version of a much poorer quality. With a little bit of photo shopping we can make the front fully straight.

We are planning to arrive at 14:00 hrs and pay the fee in cash.

See you on 25/8.

Best regards,
Hugo von Meijenfeldt

Dear Jörgen,

Thank you very much for receiving us and letting us make photographs. As soon as the official photographers have done their job, I’m most interested to receive copies.

I promised to send you material about the life of the two young counts. That will take a few weeks.

All the best,
Hugo & Lester

Dear Jörgen Lindquist,

Again thank you very much for receiving us in August. My cousin Henk van Luijk, son of Elly von Meijenfeldt, says hello as well.

As promised I send you four photographs of your paintings. Despite the reflection the quality is better than I had expected, thanks to the technical tools my son Lester used. As soon as you have your pictures I’m grateful to receive them.

As promised I also send you information about the two sons of count Johan August Meijerfeldt jr (1725-1800) and countess Lovisa Augusta Wrede-Sparre (1745-1817):

Johan August count von Meijerfeldt III was born Stockholm 12-11-1766. At his baptism Riddarholm 14-11-1766 he had many witnesses, such as Brita Barnekow, Adam Horn and Brita Horn. Lived in Stockholm, Regeringsgatan uti huset No: 104, tre trappor up. He died Stockholm 23-05-1791, funeral service St. Jacob 25-05-1791. The artist of his painting in Stola is Jonas Forslund (1754-1809). Johan August III wears the uniform of the Kungl: Livgarde. Unmarried, no children.

Axel Friedrich count von Meijerfeldt was born Stockholm 11-11-1769. The baptism took place two days later in the Jacobskyrkan. His career: 24-02-1777 Guide regiment Västerbotten; 10-03-1779 Vändrig regiment Närke-Värmland; 1781 Stabsvändrig Livgård in his regiment; lived Rilinge, Askers district, Närke; 17-09-1785 Luitenant in his regiment; 1788 Adjudant general Armfelt; 27-03-1790 Captain 1e majorcompagnie in his regiment; 1790 Stabsadjudant father; 15-03-1793 3e Majoor in his regiment and adjudant-colonel konung Gustaf IV Adolf. Was acquitted in a court case end 1794. Died shortly after in his garrison Örebro 13-01-1795 of meningitis, buried there Nicolai kyrka 15-01-1795. The artist of his painting in Stola is Jonas Forslund (1754-1809). The painting dates from 1782 and Axel Friedrich wears the uniform of the regiment of Närke-Värmland. Unmarried, no children.

On my way to Skåne I bought the book of Nils Erdmann, “Vid Hovet och på Adelgodsen I 1700-talets Sverige”, Stockholm 1926. This book is the source for the lemma on Brita Horn in Wikipedia. The letters they wrote to each other reveal a lot of scandalous gossip and financial claims.

All the best,
Hugo von Meijenfeldt
