T<\/span>hank you that I may join your group. I am Hugo, member of <\/span>familygroup<\/span> from the Netherlands, with branches in America. The spelling of the\u00a0 name of our two families is identical, although mine carries the “von” suffix. I am still investigating how our families might be related. My <\/span>greatgreatgrandfather<\/span> (1760-1835) was the natural son of a Swedish count. Fred <\/span>Meyenfeldt<\/span> had a <\/span>greatgrandfather<\/span> who was a baron and lived 1780 in <\/span>R\u00f6sebeck<\/span>, Warburg, <\/span>Westfalia<\/span>, owner of <\/span>Desenberg<\/span>. His son August Wolfgang Julius was born 1793 in Switzerland, died <\/span>R\u00f6sebeck<\/span> 30-04-1848, military and mayor, married Emilia <\/span>Scholing<\/span>, four children of whom Julius Friedrich (1817-1864) married Caroline Julie <\/span>Friederike<\/span> von <\/span>Gilsa<\/span>. One of their 5 children was Fred, who emigrated to America. Fred <\/span>jr<\/span> (1924-2006) once called my wife to ask me a lot of questions, but did not leave his phone number. Do you have more information about the early history or are you <\/span>focussing<\/span> on the descendants of Fred <\/span>sr<\/span> only? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I wonder who your grandmother was, because Fred Jr had 9 (older) sisters. He shared the same mother <\/span>Sartory<\/span> with 2 married sisters: Jessy May (<\/span>Obert<\/span>) and Elsie Helen (first Searle, later Gilpin). His married <\/span>half sisters<\/span> with an earlier mother Wilkin were Alice Sidney (<\/span>Airly<\/span>), Ada\/Ida <\/span>Isobell<\/span> (Scott), and Laura Irene (Warburton).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As <\/span>fas<\/span> as I know Fred Jr did not have children, neither from his first marriage to Agnes Brooks, nor from his second Clair Edwards. That would mean the name <\/span>Meyenfeldt<\/span> died out in America, although <\/span>Meyerfeld<\/span> and <\/span>Mayerfeld<\/span> flourishes in Jewish families.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I know most names and years of Fred <\/span>Sr’s<\/span> three sisters and one brother, who lived in a institute for disabled people in Germany, and also of his parents. The longer we go back, the less information I have.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hopefully you are both interested in descendants and ancestors.<\/span><\/p>\n

In that case you probably already have the similar picture of the gravestone of your <\/span>greatgrandmother<\/span>\u00a0Anna <\/span>Sartory<\/span>, born Pittsburgh, <\/span>Allegeny<\/span> PV 25-09-1890, died Casper 25 or 27-09-1958, daughter of Emil Herman <\/span>Sartory<\/span> (1849-1931)\u00a0and Anna Mary <\/span>Schuppe<\/span> (1867-), married\u00a0Rapid City, Pennington SD 21-02-1912 to\u00a0baron\u00a0<\/span>Ferdinand (Fred) August Julius <\/span>Meyenfeldt<\/span>, * <\/span>R\u00f6sebeck<\/span> 25-04-1860, \u2020 Casper, Natrona WY 18-05-1939. With regard to your question where I fit in I am still researching. The answer lies somewhere in <\/span>R\u00f6sebeck<\/span>, Switzerland or somewhere else in Europe. The three European generations before Fred <\/span>Sr<\/span> were called \u201cvon <\/span>Meyenfeldt<\/span>\u201d, even closer to my name. Do you have any stories about Europe? I am also interested in the full paper clipping about the Prussian baron.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Thank you very much for the interesting and beautiful newspaper clippings. Let me add some details.<\/span><\/p>\n

I already wrote about the father of\u00a0 Ferdinand (baron Julius Friedrich von <\/span>Meyenfeld<\/span>, 1817-1864) and his ancestors. His mother was <\/span>barones<\/span> Caroline von und <\/span>zu<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Gilsa<\/span> (1821-). When he was four years old his father died.\u00a0 His mother married Joseph Weber five years later. This person exploited the <\/span>Desenberg<\/span> family estate commercially. His grandmother <\/span>barones<\/span> Sophie von <\/span>Leliwa<\/span> (1792-1871) – whom divorced his grandfather Ludwig Karl von und <\/span>zu<\/span> Gilsa<\/span> (1789-1856) – was shocked and decided to adopt Ferdinand. She arranged that he could live with her family and follow an agricultural school in Germany. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When Fred after his studies emigrated to America he continued <\/span>te<\/span> receive an allowance from his grandmother’s family until World War I. He started as a farmer and later – when he became a painter – continued botanical activities in his spare time. On August 13, 1884, two months after his marriage to\u00a0 Margaret Jane Wilson <\/span>Wilkin, he was arrested in relation to the murder of Henry Hick. This man was active in a trade union. While attacking strike breakers he was shot. In the end only William Smith was accused, Fred was sent home. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I hope you like de details of Ferdinand’s life. If you knew them already or are not particularly interested, please let me know.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is all so interesting and unknown to me. \u00a0Please keep sharing information. \u00a0Our father, Lester <\/span>Obert<\/span>, was always interested in family history and intended to compile it in a book. He is in the latter stages of Parkinson\u2019s Disease and no longer capable of answering my questions. My biggest question has been \u201chow did Ferdinand and Anna Marie <\/span>Sartory<\/span> get together?\u201d \u00a0She was living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and he was in Pennington, South Dakota. Do you know the answer to that?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I can only assume how Fred and Anna Marie met. What do you think of the possibility that Fred visited the Phipps Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh as often as he could, because his education and profession in those day<\/span>s<\/span> was in farming and gardening, focusing in <\/span>botanics<\/span> and flowers? They could have met each other over there, but that is a wild guess.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This time it is me who found a newspaper. Fred was a speaker at a “green” conference in Rapid City, one year after his first wife died of rheumatism. <\/span>https:\/\/babel.hathitrust.org\/cgi\/pt?id=chi.105940418&view=1up&seq=31&size=125<\/span><\/a><\/span>. <\/span>It is quite certain that he spoke at other conferences as well. Why not in Chicago? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Thank you, I had never seen that article before. I wonder how Ferdinand ended up in Casper? \u00a0I\u2019m trying to reach out to my Dad\u2019s cousins to see if they have any of these answers. I opened up an old suitcase that my father gave me. \u00a0It held old pictures (many unnamed). Pictures of Ferdinand and Anna Maria <\/span>Meyenfeldt<\/span>. There is a framed ribbon that says \u201cfather\u201d that had been on Ferdinand\u2019s casket. Maybe if I do enough digging in it I\u2019ll find something that answers some questions. <\/span>Have <\/span>you<\/span> taken <\/span>an<\/span> Ancestry<\/span> DNA test?\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
